The Volcano That Gave Birth To A Game Reserve:


Located 160 km from Johannesburg in the North West Province, Pilanesberg National Park is South Africa’s fourth-largest game reserve, spanning 57,000 hectares. Set within the crater of a long-extinct volcano, this unique park features rare geological formations and diverse landscapes, including rocky outcrops, forested ravines, rolling grasslands, and bushveld plains.



A Rich & Historical Heritage:


The Pilanesberg volcanic complex, formed over 1.3 billion years ago, is one of the largest of its kind in the world, having withstood millennia of erosion. The area also holds Stone and Iron Age sites, offering insight into the region’s early human inhabitants.



Wildlife & Game Viewing:


  1. Home to over 35 mammal species, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo).
  2. Spot a variety of other wildlife, such as cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and hippos.
  3. The park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 350 bird species recorded.
  4. Features 65 reptile species in a malaria-free environment.


Tour Experience:


  1. Entry through Manyane Gate in the east, exploring the park’s breathtaking landscapes.
  2. Game drive in search of wildlife, with stops at designated viewing hides.
  3. Lunch at Bakubung Lodge, meaning “People of the Hippo.”
  4. Afternoon safari drive, continuing the search for animals before returning to Manyane Gate.
  5. Return to Johannesburg in the late afternoon.
