Tour Description


Important Information:


Visitors to Wonder Cave should wear comfortable shoes and avoid bringing handbags or large luggage. The cave features narrow pathways and stairways, making it unsuitable for those with claustrophobia, acute asthma, or chest conditions.



Bothongo Wonder Cave:


Located in Kromdraai, Gauteng, within the Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, the Bothongo Wonder Cave is part of the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is 5-10 million years old and ranks as the third-largest cave chamber in South Africa, following the Sudwala Caves and Cango Caves.


Key Features:


  1. Vast Chamber – Covers 46,000 square metres (500,000 sq ft), measuring 125m x 154m.
  2. Historical Discovery – Found in the late 19th century by limestone miners. Mining ceased during the Second Boer War and was never resumed.
  3. Growing Formations – Features 14 stalactite and stalagmite formations, some up to 15m high, with 85% still actively growing.
  4. Accessible by Elevator – Visitors descend 60m into the cave using an elevator.

The Wonder Cave can be visited as an independent attraction or as part of a larger exploration of the Cradle of Humankind.



Maropeng - The Official Visitor Centre:


Approximately 10 km from the Sterkfontein Caves, Maropeng offers a world-class visitor experience, opened in December 2005. The Tumulus Building, resembling an ancient burial mound, serves as the entrance, symbolizing the journey through human evolution.


Inside, visitors embark on an interactive, self-guided experience, bringing the history of humankind to life through audio-visual displays, immersive exhibits, and real fossils.
